Overview

JOB SUMMARY:  Provide leadership and expertise in areas of environmental, occupational health and safety (EHS), risk management, and workers compensation/loss control management to business units across domestic manufacturing locations.  Assist the facilities to maintain compliance with all applicable EHS requirements (both GSF and regulatory).  Monitor and ensure accurate timely reporting of appropriate metrics.  As a subject matter expert, support representing GSF with government agencies, industry associations, and/or other organizations as needed.  Aid facilities in actions to eliminate worker injuries and associated costs, improve pollution prevention, and waste minimization. Offer leadership and expertise to facilities and give corporate oversight in the areas of EHS.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Assist in development of corporate guidelines, assist in implemention and monitor comprehensive safety processes and management practices to meet all applicable safety rules and company policy requirements company-wide. Responsibilities to include but not limited to: ergonomics, machine guarding, hazard communication, powered industrial vehicles, electrical safety, fire protection and emergency preparedness, and driver safety.

 

  1. Work with domestic manufacturing facilities to assure training of all associates to maintain full compliance and eliminate safety and environmental violations and costs including, but not limited to, training on general safety and environmental awareness; specific programs (e.g. confined space, personal protective equipment (PPE), powered industrial vehicles, defensive driving, stormwater, spill response); enforcement provisions including the potential for fines, forced shutdowns, and imprisonment; equipment operation; and general safety practices.

 

  1. Identify and interpret regulatory standards that impact operational exposures and business activities and guide needed plans to ensure compliance within the domestic manufacturing facilities.

 

  1. Assist in development of corporate guidelines, assist in implemention and monitor comprehensive environmental processes and management practices to meet all applicable environmental rules and company policy requirements. Responsibilities to include but not limited to: waste water discharge, solid waste disposal, hazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal, air emissions, spill prevention control and countermeasures, stormwater national pollutant discharge elimination system, and ozone depleting substances.

 

  1. Apprise management of emerging issues, current status with respect to those issues, and the resources necessary to comply.

 

  1. Conduct periodic EHS inspections and behavoiral observations.

 

  1. Reviews and assist in implementation and execution of general health and safety policies and procedures for domestic manufacturing facilities. In addition, facilitate the sharing of programs, procedures, tools, and sucessfully demonstrated practices within the Corporation.

 

  1. Provide input in identifying and tracking appropriate KPIs and assessing site EHS performance within the domestic manufacturing facilities.

 

  1. Implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards by assisting in the creation of functional strategies and specific objectives for safety focus groups and develops procedures/policies to support the functional infrastructure across domestic manufacturing facilities.

 

  1. Audit periodically facilities for EHS compliance as directed by management.

 

  1. Communicate with domestic manufacturing business unit management and associates and provide relevant reports and analyses to ensure appropriate decision making on EHS issues. Conduct analyses on special project assignments.

 

  1. Disseminate new developments in EHS technologies (e.g. automation, pollution controls, waste minimization).

 

  1. Review capital expenditure requests for EHS compliance and advise business unit leadership of capital needs during the company budget planning process.

 

  1. Perform EHS due dilligence activities related to any acquisitions or divestures as requested.

 

  1. Assist in issue resolution and communicate with Federal, State/Provincial, and Local authorities regarding compliance issues and negotiate means of compliance. Assist management during civil or criminal investigations.

 

  1. Performs other related and assigned duties by management.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  Education and experience equivalent to:

Education/Certification:

BS degree in Engineering, Life Science, Safety, or Risk Management from an accredited college or university.  Certification as a Certified Safety Professional and OSHA 30 Hour is a plus.

 

Work Experience:

7 to 10 years of relevant work experience within the food manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution environment.
